Subject: Probing the Biochemistry of an Unusual Fatty Acid Desaturase
Seminar Summary: Chloroplast membranes are comprised of a diverse set of specialized lipids with many essential (sub)cellular functions. Our lab is interested in the function, synthesis, turnover, and trafficking of these specialized lipids and study these processes through a number of genetics, biochemical, and lipidomics approaches. This presentation will present evidence for a new connection between chloroplast redox pathways (PEROXIREDOXIN Q) and fatty acid desaturation (FATTY ACID DESATURASE4). Furthermore, results will be presented on the synthesis, regulation, and function of one of these specialized lipids found in nearly all higher plants, 16:1Δ3trans fatty acid.
