Subject: Exploiting vitamin metabolism for algal biotechnology
About the Speaker
University: University of Cambridge, United Kingdom
Research Interests: Research in Alison Smith's group is exploring the potential for exploitation of algae for biotechnology, in particular metabolic engineering to develop microalgae as a production platform for high value products, and gene discovery for novel compounds.
In addition, the group is studying the molecular basis of interactions between algae and bacteria in which the latter supply algae with vitamin B12 in return for photosynthate. The implications of this for aquatic microbial communities, both natural and industrial, are being investigated.
